PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Oct. 3, 2008)-Fresh off a 6-0 weekend and haven played their first 19 matches on the road, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was glad to come home to a friendly crowd of 1,745 for its home opener. The Lady Hawks did not disappoint, as they responded with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division victory over Morgan State on Friday evening at the Hytche Center.
The match, which was also the MEAC opener for both teams, was the Lady Hawks third straight victory over Morgan State dating back to last season.
Christine Edwards led UMES (14-6, 1-0 MEAC) with a match-high 14 kills and Whitney Johnson added eight kills in the win, while Christina Estebane' tallied a match-high 33 assists.
Morgan State (1-17, 0-1 MEAC), which fell behind 10-3 in the second set, pulled within five points at 15-10, following a kill by Kierra Riley. However, as has been the case all season long, Morgan State allowed the host Lady Hawks to counter with a multiple-point run. This time a scoring spurt of seven consecutive points, six of which came off the serve of Leah Amundson, extended the Hawks lead to 22-10.
Rhyan Shy led the Lady Bears with six kills and Ivanti Bush and Erin Cox each added four kills for Morgan State, which finished with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of -.058 for the match. Christa Rogers had 12 of the Lady Bears' 16 assists and Dina Beamon led the squad with seven digs.
Morgan State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Howard for its MEAC home opener at 3 p.m. at Hill Field House.
