Dr. Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones, Jr. received his early education at the Grambling College Laboratory School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University in 1960 and his Master of Science degree in recreation administration and supervision in 1961. In 1977, Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. in recreation administration from the University of Maryland College Park.
Dr. Jones began his coaching career at Morgan State in 1966. His swimming teams won back to back CIAA championships in 1969 and 1970. The first championship was only by 15 points over a three day period and the second championship was only won by five points. Under the leadership of Coach Jones two different Morgan State swimmers won the outstanding swimmer’s award in 1969 and 1970: Dr. J. Laws Nickens, Jr – 1969 and Mr. Paul Hubbard – 1970. Dr. Jones also coached wrestling at Morgan State University and was named CIAA wrestling coach during his tenure.
In 1961, Dr. Jones began his career at Morgan State University as a lecturer in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, helping to develop the University’s curriculum in recreation administration and supervision. Beginning in 1972, Dr. Jones served as chairman of the undergraduate program in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Baltimore and developed the curriculum for a Master of Science degree in urban recreation. He went on to serve as Director and Associate Professor of the Graduate Program in Urban Recreation at the University of Baltimore from 1974 – 1988. Dr. Jones was later appointed as Director of Recreation and Parks of the City of Baltimore by Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke.
Dr. Jones departed this life on March 14, 1989, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jesola Jones, and three sons: Ralph Eldrige Jones, Ernest Emerson Jones, and Warren Waldo Jones. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Men of Tomorrow, Inc Continuing Dr. Jones’ commitment to community and Morgan State University, the Jones family established a scholarship endowment fund at Morgan State University in his name to support deserving students in 1990.
