Dr. John Laws Nickens, Jr. is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He matriculated at Morgan State University in 1967, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in May 1970.
Dr. Nickens, Jr., was a member of the Morgan State University swimming team from 1968 – 1970, and was an instrumental member in helping this team win two consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships in 1969 and 1970. During the 1969 CIAA championships held at Hampton University, he set the record for the 400 yard individual medley at Hampton University clocking in at ?? and participated on the team broke the record for the 800 yard freestyle relay. Dr. Nickens, Jr. also took first place in the 200 yard backstroke and second place in the 200 yard individual medley. In recognition of his tremendous achievements, Dr. Nickens was selected by the CIAA swimming coaches at the 1969 recipient of the Clarence Pendleton Award recipient, signifying him as the most outstanding swimmer of the championship meet.
During the 1970 CIAA championships, Dr. Nickens continued his outstanding performances by setting a new record in the 200 yard freestyle and the 400 yard individual medley. He also set a new meet record in the 1650 yard freestyle while also participating on the 400 yard freestyle relay team.
Dr. Nickens, Jr. earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in 1975, and has had a private dentistry practice in Baltimore, Maryland for more than thirty years. He is a member of the Maryland Dental Society, the National Dental Association, and the American Association of Public Health Dentists.
Dr. Nickens is a member of the Morgan State University Varsity “M” Club, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Black Ski club and The Rafter.
