 Clarence "Mel" Hurtt was born at Sparrows Point Md. and now resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and graduated in 1941.
    
In September of 1941 Mel entered Morgan State College. After a tour of duty in World War 2, he reentered Morgan and graduated in 1948.
    
While at Morgan, Mel participated in football and track. He was a member of Morgan's C.I.A.A. championship football teams of 1941 and 1942 and 1946. However he will be best remembered for his track feats.
    
In 1941,1942,1946 and 1947 Mel was the C.I.A.A two miles champion. He was also the one mile champion in 1941,1942 and 1947. For four years Mel was the National Health Week Marathon Champion.
    
Mel's accomplishments in track and football truly aided Morgan's glorious athletic tradition. Since leaving morgan, Mel has served in the United States Military Service, achieving a rank of colonel.
    
Some of Mel's awards and decorations are: Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze star medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnamese Distinguished Service Order, Gallantry Cross with Gold Star, Paul Lawrence Dunbar Hall of Fame, Morgan State college Faculty and Student Award and Morgan State College Alumni award Washington D.C chapter.
    
Today Mel is an associate professor of history at Morgan State University. He is married and is the father of two children. His family consists of wife Virginia and two daughters. Ms. Robert J. Adersen and Mrs. Susan Tucker; also a grandson Robert and a granddaughter Stephanie.
