Roberts selected to Jerry Rice Award Watch List

Jerry Rice Awards

BALTIMORE, Md.
– Morgan State freshman linebacker Elandon Roberts has been added to the 2012 Jerry Rice Award Watch List.

The selection puts Roberts among the top freshmen players in the country, adding further recognition to the linebacker's outstanding first season.

Named after the NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, a star receiver at Mississippi Valley State, the award goes to the top freshman player in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division 1-AA. Following the completion of the regular season, a national panel of sports journalists, sports information and media relations directors and other designated individuals will select the prize-winner from a final field of 20 athletes.

The current list consists of eight quarterbacks, six linebackers, two running backs, one wide receiver, one all-purpose player and one strong safety. The winner will be announced at the Football Championship Subdivision national banquet to be held on Monday, Dec. 17, in Philadelphia.

Roberts, 6-1, 225, leads Morgan State in tackles with 83 (T-28th in FCS) to go along with seven tackles for loss and a sack. The Port Arthur, Texas., native is second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in tackles per game with 9.2 and has an interception in nine games.

Roberts kicked off his collegiate career with double-digit tackles (11) in the season-opener against Sacred Heart. He followed that performance by recording seven tackles, a tackle for a loss and an interception against BCS opponent Buffalo and was named MEAC Player of the Week. The Bear linebacker also snagged his second MEAC Rookie of the Week honor after collecting a game-high 14 tackles and a tackle for a loss during a 21-18 victory against North Carolina A&T in an ESPNU nationally televised game.
