BALTIMORE, Md. (April 3, 2010)-The Morgan State softball dropped the third and final game of its three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series against Coppin State with a 10-2 loss to the Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Coppin State Softball Complex.
The Eagles, who finished with 10 runs on nine hits and committed just one error, used a nine-run outing in the second inning to put away Morgan State. The Lady Bears, who have now lost a season-long 15 games, finished with two runs on two hits and tallied three errors in the game.
With the series loss, the Lady Bears have now dropped three of their last four MEAC series, dating back to last season with the fourth ending in a doubleheader split against Delaware State. The third game of the Delaware State series was rained out.
Coppin State (15-10, 3-0 MEAC) continued its hot hitting in the series with its nine-run outburst in the second inning to break a scoreless game. Amber Miller started off the inning by reaching on a Morgan State error and then advanced to second when Charma Robinson reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Nicole Boggs then brought in the first run of the game with a base hit to left field that scored Miller.
Patrice Williams reached on an infield single that loaded the bases with no outs. Stephanie Watts produced an RBI single that increased the lead to 2-0, as Robinson scored.
Coppin State held a 4-0 lead when Jade Dudley increased the lead to 5-0 with an RBI base hit and then the Eagles loaded the bases when Paige Arnold singled down the left field line. Miller finally cleared the bases with a bases loaded double, extending the lead to 8-0 all with one out. Miller later scored on a passed ball for the final run of the inning.
Morgan State (4-17, 0-3 MEAC) finally scored its first runs of the weekend, with two runs in the top of the fourth. Tamra Griffin reached first base after striking out and beating the catchers' throw and Kriston Gowan followed with a hard hit shot to left field. Hannah Montgomery recorded the Lady Bears' other hit, when she drove in two runs with her single to right field, cutting the deficit to 9-2.
Coppin went right back to work in the bottom half of the inning with Arnold leading off with a double to left and later scored on a throwing error to make it a 10-2 advantage.
Morgan State returns to action next Saturday, April 10, when it plays host to Hampton in a MEAC doubleheader. First pitch begins at noon at Lois T. Murray Field. The game will be the home opener for the Lady Bears.
