Griffin Named First-Team All-MEAC

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2009)—Morgan State sophomore third baseman, Tamra Griffin was named to the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) first team during Wednesday's pre-tournament banquet at the Center for Civil Engagement on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University. All-conference honors were voted on by the league's head softball coaches and sports information directors.

Griffin, who started in all 28 games played, led the MEAC with a .425 batting average and was the team leader in hits (34), homeruns (6), slugging percentage (.775) and was tied for the team lead in walks with 11.

Joining Griffin on the first-team were Alyssa Velazquez and Meghan Ramsey (Norfolk State), pitcher of the year Amanda Reyes and Rhianna Green (Florida A&M), player of the year Ryanne Hill (North Carolina A&T), Kelsi Saunders and Evelyn Garcia (Hampton), Mishayla Truttman and Kendra Saunders (UMES) and Andrea Waters (Delaware State). Head coach Sam Douglas of UMES was named coach of the year.

The Lady Bears finished the season with a 15-13 overall record, including a 7-7 mark in the MEAC, which tied them with Maryland Eastern Shore. UMES, by way of its two games to one series win over Morgan State, secured the fourth and final spot in the MEAC North Division and advanced to the MEAC Tournament.

Due to the tie-break scenario, the Lady Bears fell to fifth-place in the MEAC North and were eliminated from postseason play, marking the first time in school history the team did not advance to the league tournament.
