THOMPSON SELECTED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR THE FIFTH TIME

BALTIMORE, Md. – Redshirt freshman Kevin Thompson of Morgan State University was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, for the week ending February 16, 2009 the league announced Monday afternoon.
Tywain McKee of Coppin State was selected as the Player of the Week while South Carolina State's Jason Johnson was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Thompson (F, 6-8, 235, r-Fr., Baltimore, Md.) earns the conference's Rookie of the Week honor for the second straight week, fifth rookie weekly accolade of the season. He averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds to help the conference-leading Bears to a 2-0 mark last week. He shot 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the field against South Carolina State and was 5-of-10 against Florida A&M. He also collected eight boards in the 75-57 win. 

The Bears, who are 15-10 and 9-2 in the conference, resume their schedule tonight when they take on Bethune-Cookman University in Hill Field House, followed by a Wednesday night (Feb. 18) showdown in Washington, D.C. at Howard University.
Other top players of the week included junior guard Reggie Holmes. Holmes averaged 17 points and four rebounds in two wins last week for the Bears. The Baltimore product has amassed 1,078 points in his three year career and is currently the 15th leading scorer in Morgan State history.

Morgan State will face cross-town rival Towson on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 4 p.m. in the Towson Center as one of 51 games that comprise the 7th Annual ESPNU BracketBusters. The Bears are the first MEAC team to participate in the two-day men's basketball event that pits 102 potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other three weeks prior to Selection Sunday.
