MSU’s Adams Earns MEAC Player of the Week Honor

BALTIMORE, Md. – Redshirt freshman punter Nicholas Adams of Morgan State University was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending October 18, 2009 the league announced Monday.

Dennis Brown of Norfolk State was selected as Offensive Player of the Week, while Jason Ayers of South Carolina State earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. NSU's Jerome Johnson earned Offensive Lineman of the Week and Howard's Andra Williams was selected as the Rookie of the Week.

MSU coach Donald Hill-Eley feels he may have one of the best punters in the MEAC in redshirt freshman Nicholas Adams. Adams, a Fayetteville, N.C. native, averaged 38.5 yards per punt with a career-high 11 punts, including a long of 50 yards, and two inside the 20 yard-line, in the Bears 14-7 win over Howard.
Adams currently ranks No. 5 in the MEAC in punting (37.8 avg) and has placed 14 punts inside the 20. In addition to his steady performance, Adams may be one of the largest punters in the nation by standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 245 pounds.

The Bears, who are 5-1 for the first time since 1979, resume their schedule on Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup against Delaware State (1-5, 1-3). The game will be broadcast by WEAA, 88.9 FM. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in Dover, Delaware.

Other Top Performances
George Howard (MSU) recorded 12 tackles, seven solo, with one for a loss of one yard.  He also forced a fumble and helped the Bears extend its win streak to five.
Devan James (MSU) rushed 22 times for 103 yards to help the Bears hold off the Bison in a 14-7 ESPNU televised game. 
Josh Anderson (NSU) tallied seven tackles, four solo, with two for a loss of 17 yards.  He also added a sack and forced fumble as he aided the Spartans to victory over Hampton in the Battle of the Bay Classic.
Martin Corniffe (HOW) recorded five tackles, one quarterback hurry and forced a fumble in Howard's loss to Morgan State.
Johnny Culbreath (SCSU) anchored the Bulldogs interior line that accounted for 370 total offensive yards.  He recorded five pancake blocks and graded out at 84-percent on his assignment in the Bulldogs victory. 
Ryan Davis (B-CU) registered five tackles, four solo, with one for a loss of four yards in the Wildcats win over the Savannah State Tigers.
Kevin Elliott (FAMU) caught nine passes for 111 yards with one touchdown in the Rattlers loss to S.C. State.
Nick Elko (DSU) completed 18-of-34 passes for 151 yards in the Hornets loss to Michigan.
Will Ford (SCSU) became South Carolina State's all-time leading rusher after he recorded 24 carries for 141 yards with two touchdowns in the Bulldogs 35-20 win over Florida A&M.
Ryan Griffin (B-CU) helped shoulder an offensive line that accounted for 356 yards of total offense, including 281 yards rushing, in the Wildcats victory over the SSU Tigers.
Nick Lochner (DSU) recorded a career-high 10 punts for 366 yards (36.6 avg.) with three inside the 20 yard-line in the Hornets loss to Michigan.
Courtney Keith (B-CU) returned three kickoffs for 88 yards (29 avg.) to help Bethune-Cookman pick up its second consecutive victory.
Fred McCaskill (B-CU) rushed five times for 109 yards (21.8 avg.) with two touchdowns in the Wildcats 34-24 victory over non-conference foe Savannah State.
Trevor Scott (FAMU) scored eight of the Rattler's 20 points with 2-of-3 field goals in a loss to S.C. State.
