BALTIMORE, Md. – Redshirt freshman Kevin Thompson of Morgan State University was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, for the week ending January 19, 2009 the league announced Wednesday.
Vincent Simpson of Hampton and Norfolk State's Corey Lyons were selected as the Co-Player's of the Week while Hampton's Theo Smalling was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Thompson (F, 6-8, 235, r-Fr., Baltimore, Md.) recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, including three blocks in 28 minutes of play, in the Bears win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. He recorded 23 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots to help MSU finish 1-1 in their last two outings. It marked the third time this season that Thompson has earned the honor of MEAC Rookie of the Week.
Other top players of the week included junior guard Reggie Holmes. The Baltimore product recorded a game-high 29 points, shooting 50-percent from the field including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, in the Bears win over Bethune-Cookman. Holmes scored 16 points at Florida A&M, and finished the week averaging 22.5 ppg and shot 44 percent from the field.
The Bears, who are 9-9 and 4-1 in the conference, resume their schedule when they host Howard on Saturday afternoon. The game is set to tip-off at Hill Field House at 4 p.m.
