Morgan Closes Out 2008 With Loss to UMES, 68-58

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 30, 2008)-Morgan State's Theresa Davis recorded a double-double with a game- and career-high 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as the host Lady Bears dropped a 68-58 decision to league foe Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Hill Field House.

Maryland Eastern Shore (2-6), which started the season losing its first six games, was led by Casey Morton (18 points) and April McBride (16 points), who along with Tiffany Reid (12 points, eight rebounds) each added eight rebounds to lead the Lady Hawks to a 49-40 rebounding advantage over Morgan.

The victory, which handed Morgan State its first home loss of the season in five games, was also the Lady Hawks' second consecutive win over Morgan State and second straight victory at Hill Field House. It also marked the first two-game losing skid for the Lady Bears this season.

Morgan State (8-3) which was coming off a two-week layoff since a 71-43 loss at VCU, missed its first five shots and fell behind 5-0, before using a 15-6 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Erin Hawkins with 12:38 left in the opening half to take a 15-11 lead.

Morgan held its largest lead of the half after a layup by Mahala Thomas made it a 21-14 game and led 27-22 with 3:11 remaining until halftime. However, UMES would score nine straight points in the midst of a 9-2 spurt to take a 31-29 advantage into the locker room.

The Lady Bears began the second half on a 14-5 run, in which Corin Adams accounted for 10 of the points, to take a 43-36 lead with 14:35 left in the contest.

Maryland Eastern Shore would not go away, this time countering with a 10-0 run to pull in front, 46-43. Morgan State's Brittany Dodson would later even the score at 57 all, following her layup with 2:47 to play, but the guests would close out the game scoring 11 of the game's final 12 points for the 68-58 victory.

UMES shot 22-of-59 (37 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-21 (33 percent) from three-point range, while the Lady Bears connected on 20-of-64 (31 percent) from the field and 3-for-26 (11 percent) from three-point range.

Morgan State finished with 13 steals, led by Adams and Dodson, who had three apiece and forced 20 turnovers by the Lady Hawks. UMES held a 14 to 11 advantage in assists with Bria Jackson leading all players with five.

Adams finished with 14 points, all in the second half, to give her 1,114 points for her career. Adams is now four points shy of surpassing Carla Thomas (1,117 points from 1984-87) for eighth-place all-time at Morgan State. Hawkins added 10 points, eight of which came in the first half.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3rd, when they ring in the New Year against crosstown rival Coppin State at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will be the conference opener for both teams.
